Multiplication Graduates

Congratulations to the following students for making it onto the "Multiplication Graduates" board.

Graduates from Mrs. Lund's Class

Graduates from Ms. Heitkamp's Class

Junior Achievement

Tuesday was our last day of Junior Achievement.  Students had the opportunity to play a board game that focused on some of the concepts that were taught over the last 5 weeks.  Players included a banker, money manger, bookkeeper, reader, mover and enforcer.  Students drew cards and then collected or payed the expense listed on the card.  They recorded their income and expenses on a financial report and at the end of the game determined if their company had made a profit or took a loss.

Math Graduates

The following students have earned their picture on the "Multiplication Graduates" board.  There are many students that are close to earning 95/100 or better in 5 minutes or less on 5 consecutive timed tests.  Keep practicing those facts nightly.

Veteran's Day Program

Students participated in a special Veteran's Day Assembly on Friday.  The American Legion Honor Guard began the program by posting the colors.  Students sang a variety of patriotic songs and 4th graders shared poems they had written.

Students spent last week working on their Veteran's Day poems in language arts class.  The following students were voted by their classmates to share their poem at the Veteran's Day program.

On Veteran's Day

On Veteran's Day, we take the time to
Honor the people we know.
To celebrate the soldiers who fought for our freedom.

On Veteran's Day, we say
The Pledge of Allegiance and sing
The Star Spangled Banner
Because we are proud of what we can do for America.

On Veteran's Day, we say our prayers
For the soldiers who have died
And for the soldiers who are fighting.
Thank you for protecting our country.

Veteran's Day Respect

All soldiers are brave and strong
They fight for our country, they are in it for all.
They stand under the flag red, white and blue.
They fight for everyone including you.
They work for the Army, Navy and others too.
But when it comes to serving, they are the best for you.
They work together to keep our country safe.
They travel the world, but they start at one place.
A place where it is safe, calm and pleasant,
A place where people send you presents.
They leave that place to defend our rights
With courage and bravery, it is sad they have to fight.
So thank you for helping and serving for us.
And for the people we have lost thinking of them is a must.

Pajama Day

Students had the opportunity to watch The Ant Bully. This movie contains some great messages, most importantly that those who appear to have nothing in common can turn out to be very much alike and that the impossible can be accomplished if all work together toward a common goal. Students had a great time lounging on mats in their pajamas during the movie. "LET'S PUT THE BULLIES TO BED!"

Language Arts Update

In Language Arts this week, we will be focusing on differentiating facts and opinions in what we're reading. Following through with this focus, we will be starting our next big writing piece which will state an opinion we have and support that thought with at least 3 detailed reasons. We will begin our prewriting/brainstorming piece and work towards finishing a rough draft by the end of the week. Reminder, Reading Logs are due with at least 120 minutes.

Classroom Updates

We have 2 SCSU field experience teachers that started in our room today.  They will be joining us everyday for the next 4 weeks.

We will be having our end of the month reward this week for all students who do not have any late work.  Please check with your child to be sure they are all caught up!

Our first White Elephant Sale will be held on Friday.  Students were given a permission slip that needs to be signed and returned in order to participate.  We are practicing responsibility, so they will not receive another form if they lose theirs.

Friday is pajama day and our school will be viewing the movie "Ant Bully" as a culmination to Bully Prevention Month.

Multiplication Facts

Dear Families,

We are off to a great year and I am enjoying working with my magnificent mathematicians!  It is crucial that students are fluent with their multiplication and divisions facts.  In the next few months, we will be getting into 2 and 3-digit multiplication and long division.  Having basic facts memorized will make it possible for students to be successful with these more advanced processes.  Not having the basic facts memorized will make learning these concepts very difficult.  I will be sending home a weekly multiplication checklist.  Students are required to practice their facts 5 days each week for at least 10 minutes/day and get a parent signature before turning their checklist in each Friday.  Please watch for the first checklist to come home Friday, November 1.  I have tested the students and they know which facts they need to be working on at this time.  Once they feel comfortable with those facts, they will test and move onto the next set of facts.  They are working toward getting their picture on the “Multiplication Graduates” bulletin board.

How can you help?
Practice with your child FIVE days a week.
Concentrate on the facts your child is struggling with.
Make it fun - play games (memory, flashcards, bingo, websites)
Place post-its around the house of multiplication facts.

Thank you for your support at home!

Math Update - Unit 3

http://www.coolmath.com/prealgebra/02-decimals/images/decimals01-1.gif

In math class, we have been working on place value. Students are expected to read, write and round numbers into the ten thousands. Today, we talked about the four different ways to write a number:

Standard Form - 268
Word Form - two hundred sixty-eight
Expanded Form - 200 + 60 + 8
Place Value Form - 2 hundreds, 6 tens, 8 ones

We also reviewed rounding a number to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand.  The rest of this week, students will work on comparing numbers and reading and writing large numbers into the millions. After practicing reading and writing them, we will work on lining them up correctly in order to add them together.
