Math Update - Unit 2 Quadrilaterals

Geometry: Unit 2 contains six lessons, which means we will be taking another math test next week. This unit explores congruence, similarity, and symmetry; parallel and perpendicular lines; and the difference among some quadrilaterals (square, rectangle, trapezoid, parallelogram, and rhombus). In addition, activities in this unit help students understand what perimeter and area are and how they are measured.

Facts: Please continue to practice facts each night. 95% accuracy is required in 5 minutes or less for multiplication and division.

New Friend

We have a cute little chipmunk friend that likes to appear outside our classroom every so often.  Most days, he is burrowing in the grass. The kids are enjoying looking out the window to see if he is there.

News from the Office

Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s):

Thanks for making the start of the 2013-2014 school year a great one!  We have really enjoyed having Pleasantview once again full of the energy and excitement that comes with 678 elementary students.

There are a few items we need your help with:

1.  Background checks:
If you are planning on volunteering at Pleasantview, please make sure that you visit www.isd47.org and complete both the volunteer form and the background check.

2.  Drop off and Pick Up:
If you are planning on picking up and/or dropping off your child in your car, please use the back safety zone. To keep everyone safe, please stay in your car and wait in line.

If you are planning to park, walk up, and pick your child up, please park along 6th Ave. and walk to door @2.  We will be coning off the front parking lot to make this a safe place for walkers and bike riders to exit the building.

We will once again be releasing K-2 students 5 minutes before 3-5 students.  If your child is in grades 3-5, please plan to arrive at PV between 2:15 -2:20 pm.  I think you will find the pick up line is significantly shorter and far less stressful.

3.  PIN(Parent Information Night)/Ice Cream Social is this Thursday, September 19th

Ice Cream Treats will be sold in the gym from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.  Classroom teachers will  be informing parents of routines and expectations for their classrooms.

The following classroom schedule will be used:

Grade 1 - will meet in classrooms from 5:40 - 6:00 pm
Grade 2 - will meet in classrooms from 6:00 - 6:20 pm
Grade 2/3 combo class will meet from 6:00 - 6:20 pm
Grade 3 - will meet in classrooms from 7:00 - 7:20 pm
Grade 4 - will meet in classrooms from 6:20 - 6:40 pm

Grade 5 - will meet in classrooms from 6:40 - 7:00 pm

Reading Update

Please watch for a parent letter and reading log to come home today.  Our main goals are to help each individual student be successful in reading and become educated lifelong learners.  In order to reach these goals, we have some expectations set in place to guide your child in becoming a skilled, confident, and excited reader.

Students will be getting a genre requirement and a 30 book goal for the year.  This will help expose them to different types of text, in turn, improving their reading skills.  They will keep track of their books in their reading notebooks at school.

Students are also required to practice reading at home.  The class has agreed that the best way to get better at something is to practice!  They will be keeping track of their reading minutes at home each week with a reading log that looks and can serve as a bookmark.  Please initial this log for your student when their reading for the night is complete.  The goal for the week is to read at least 120 minutes.  At least 20 minutes a day of focused reading is essential for them to increase their reading abilities.  Reading the newspaper, a magazine or even their favorite comic book is ok.

As we are trying to increase our classroom libraries to meet the interests and needs of all students, we are always accepting donations of any old magazines, books and other reading material that we can use in our rooms.

Thank you for your support this year and please feel free to contact your child's reading teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

Background Checks

Just a reminder that all volunteers (this includes coming to eat lunch and/or recess with your child) MUST complete a background check.  You can go online at www.isd47.org , click on volunteer programs, scroll about halfway down the screen and click on VOLUNTEER BACKGROUND CHECK APPLICATION to access a form.
