John Coy is coming to Pleasantview!

Local author and illustrator, John Coy, will be visiting Pleasantview on Tuesday, March 19th.  He is the author of Top of the Order and several other titles.  John creates books that encourage boys to read, and yet the stories appeal to everyone.  The purpose of his visit is to share the process of writing and rewriting a story.  Students in fourth and fifth grade will have an opportunity to listen to him talk about his books.  After his presentation, he will be holding an autograph session.  If you wish to pre-order one of his books, an order form was sent home with your child yesterday.  Please fill out the information on the back of this sheet and return it to school along with payment by Wednesday, February 20.  Make sure to include teacher name, student name, who it should be personalized to and the quantity you would like to order.  Make checks payable to Pleasantview Elementary.

Please visit www.johncoy.com to get complete descriptions of each book.

Guest Reader

Today we had a special guest reader to celebrate "I Love To Read Month."  A student from Sauk Rapids High School visited our classroom and read the story Horton Hatches the Egg by Dr. Seuss.  This story encourages children to always give 100%, follow through on their promises and aspirations, and face their fears.

Electricity and Magnetism

Last week in Science, we began our unit on Electricity and Magnetism.  This chapter focuses on the following topics:

Lesson 1 - What Is an Electric Current?  We discussed how objects get an electric charge and how does an electric current flow?

Lesson 2 - How Do Electric Circuits Work?  Students learned about two types of circuits and investigated the path of electricity by constructing a series and parallel circuit.

Lesson 3 - What Is Magnetism?  Monday, we will investigate how magnets act and learn how the earth is like a magnet.   On Tuesday, we will be making an electromagnet.

Lesson 4 - How Do Electricity and Magnetism Work Together?  During Wednesday's lesson, we will discover how a magnet can make electricity, explore how electricity can make a magnet and learn how electromagnets are useful.  During Thursday's lab, students will experiment and determine how the number of coils in an electromagnet affects its strength.

ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM TEST: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8TH.

Celebrate Reading

The Media Center will be having a voluntary contest during the month of February to celebrate "I Love to Read Month".  The contest will run from February 1-14 and winners will be announced on February 25th.  The contest will be open to any student who wishes to participate.

Contest Rules:
1. Students need to have a picture taken of themselves reading a book someplace.  The book and location are up to you.  Please use a digital camera and have it set to the highest resolution.  If your child wins, you will be asked to e-mail the jpg file to Mrs. Euteneuer.

2. The picture must be turned into Mrs. Euteneuer or Carol no later than Thursday, February 14.

3. Photos used for this contest will not be returned.

We will select one winning photo per grade level.  All pictures that are entered will be displayed in the media center for one month.  The winning photos will be blown up into a poster and displayed in the media center.  The posters will stay up until they graduate 5th grade.  Winners will also receive prizes.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Mrs. Euteneuer at school.
